It’s no secret: This summer has been brutal. If you’ve found yourself simultaneously Googling “pools near me” and “why is my joint compound taking so long to dry?” you’ve come to the right place. Temperature and humidity have an outsized effect on how compound cures, how drywall boards behave, and how long a job actually takes to finish right. Understanding that relationship is one of the most practical things a finisher can master.

Drywall Warping
When humidity is high, be weary of warped boards. Gypsum board is more sensitive to moisture than it looks. When the moisture content of the board isn’t properly balanced, the paper facing and gypsum core can expand and contract unevenly, leading to warping, bulging, or cracking. Taping over a board in humid conditions is risky: the finish might look fine on your watch, but once conditions dry out, the board can shrink and crack, leaving you with costly callbacks.
Mold
Trapped moisture behind or within drywall assemblies is a common driver of mold growth, which poses both a health risk to occupants and a liability risk to contractors. When moisture gets trapped behind compound and paint before everything has fully dried, you’ve created a food source that mold is happy to use. Sealing in moisture is easy to do without realizing it, and hard to undo once the wall is painted. Preventing that outcome starts well before finishing, with proper humidity control throughout the job.
Drying Times
Temperature and humidity don’t just affect the board. They directly control how joint compound cures, and pushing either variable too far in either direction causes problems.
Too much heat, too fast.
Compound naturally shrinks a small amount as it cures under normal conditions, but excess heat can cause compound to dry too quickly. The surface may look dry and paintable within a couple hours, but underneath, it’s often still wet. As the interior slowly gives up its moisture, the dried surface layer doesn’t have anywhere to move, resulting in cracking, blistering, or a bond that fails months later because the coat never fully cured from the inside out.
Too much humidity, too slow.
On the other end, damp conditions elongate drying times dramatically and can leave moisture trapped in the assembly. The ideal window for drying joint compound is a temperature range of 65–80°F with relative humidity between 20–40%. In that range—say, 70°F at 30% humidity—compound under tape will dry in roughly 12 hours, meaning a coat applied in the afternoon is ready by the next morning. Real-world jobsites rarely hit that ideal threshold, though. In severe humidity, coats that would normally set in a few hours can stretch into days, pushing back your schedule and increasing the odds that dust, debris, or a stray touch mars the surface before it’s ready.
Three Practical Tips
- Adjust your mix
Compound behaves differently in a 70°F renovation than in a 90°F new-construction with no air conditioning. Experienced finishers adjust water content, working time, and even compound type (all-purpose vs. setting-type) based on the conditions in front of them that day, rather than relying on a fixed formula. Setting-type compounds (also called hot mud), which cure through a chemical reaction rather than air-drying, can be a better choice in especially humid conditions where standard joint compound would take too long to firm up. Whether you’re tweaking your all-purpose joint compound ratio or switching to a hot mud, keep in mind that, as with all things finishing, it’s more of an art, not a science. You might need to experiment with different compound ratios until you find the one that works best for your conditions, and working with hot mud can have a slight learning curve since the drying time is so expedited. Hot mud is usually not recommended for top coats.
- Add ventilation and dehumidifiers as needed.
Managing the conditions in your working space is a must. A little bit of circulation goes a long way: open windows if you can and bring some fans (just make sure they’re positioned for whole-room circulation, not pointed directly at the compound, which could cause flash-drying and cracks). Dehumidifiers and portable air conditioning units could be used to help stabilize conditions in extreme weather.
- Schedule around realistic dry times, not ideal ones.
Above all else, remember to plan accordingly. A 12-hour dry time only applies in near-perfect conditions. If your jobsite is running humid, build extra days into the schedule rather than rushing a second coat or painting compound that isn’t fully cured. Not letting your compound fully dry between coats is a sure way to get callbacks later.
At the end of the day, heat and humidity don’t care about your schedule. The best drywall finishers are the ones who have this awareness and the foresight to plan ahead in difficult conditions. Reading the room, adjusting your approach, and giving compound the time and environment it actually needs will save far more time in callbacks than it costs upfront.
